Jesus' Early Years

     Rabbi

The title of Rabbi is synonymous with Teacher or Master in the Bible.

Jesus is referred to by one of these titles:
  • 4 times by Matthew
  • 11 times by Mark
  • 15 times by Luke
  • 9 times by John.

He also preached in synagogues and even the temple.  It seems certain that by the time he started his ministry he had earned the right to be called Rabbi, Teacher or Master.

    Which was Jesus' Sect?

At the time of Jesus, there were three religious sects - the Sadducees, the Pharisees, and the Essenses.
It seems obvious from his attitude towards the Sadducees and the Pharisees that Jesus was not a member of either of those two sects so, by elimination, he must have been raised as an Essene.

When Jesus began his ministry, therefore, he would have been a Rabbi in the Sect of the Essenes.
