Jesus' Early Years

     The Life of a Scribe

Jesus' life as a probationary scribe was not easy.  He left his family to live communally with other scribes under the supervision of a Guardian.

He rose before sunrise and said prayers for the sun to rise (some of these prayers are part of the Scrolls).

After a frugal breakfast, he was assigned tasks by the Guardian to keep him busy until lunchtime.

Sun worshippers?

Some scholars claim that the Essenes were sun worshippers but the prayers found in the Dead Sea Scrolls were to God not to the Sun.

Before and after the meal, prayers were said and then more tasks were assigned to keep him busy until suppertime and again prayers were said before and after the meal.

Then "he studied the Law day and night and watched in common for a third of every night of the year to read the Book and study law and pray together."

At the end of one year, his wealth was turned over to the Bursar who kept it separate from the general funds for a year.  At the end of the second year, when Jesus was accepted into full membership, his wealth was merged with the general funds of the sect.

After one year as a scribe, when Jesus was 28, because of his extraordinary piety and ability, he was selected to begin his education leading to becoming a Rabbi.
